It is Thursday May . A week has passed since a motion of censure was presented on Friday the th in the Registry of the Congress of Deputies . The week has been very intense. There have been bilateral meetings and above all calls many phone calls. Also many messages on WhatsApp and Telegram . Pedro Sánchez finally figures out. He has the support of the majority of the chamber and has a clear path to becoming Mariano Rajoy 's successor in the Presidency of the Government. At the last moment Sánchez wants to make a gesture to strengthen his legitimacy and offers Rajoy a way out: if he resigns he agrees to withdraw the motion of censure. Against all odds Rajoy thinks about it and after a few minutes takes the floor.
He begins by reviewing the successes during his years in office and also mentions some difficult moments. He especially refers to the entire process he experienced when he had to decide whether to come to the rescue of Brussels or not. He also talks about CXB Directory Catalonia and the unity of the Spanish nation. He talks about the greatness of democracy and the achievements achieved by Spain since the beginning of the transition. He looks at his ministers relaxes his gesture and announces his resignation as President of the Government. He does it calmly he takes his time.
He does not do it because of the corruption scandals much less because of the effects of the recent Gürtel ruling . He does it out of patriotism. Rajoy has sacrificed his personal interest for an infinitely greater one: Spain. The gesture magnifies his figure. When that afternoon at night he leaves the Congress of Deputies he will do so amidst applause and cheers. At Unidas Podemos they are aware that the situation leaves them in a very difficult position. It is the second motion of censure that they have lost in the same legislature the first was in the flesh; the second this time with the PSOE as the protagonist when it was practically won Before concluding Thursday's session Pedro Sánchez speaks again somewhat disconcerted. In a solemn tone he thanks Rajoy for his gesture and asks the vice president to take over to call elections as soon as possible.
